This back-to-school season is going to be different

By Erica Keswin

This back-to-school season is going to be different.

Why?

Because of the concerted effort to ban phones in school districts across the nation.

I had to hear about this for myself, so I asked my friend’s son at dinner last week.

Their son is a junior in high school and he loves his tech—Xbox, phone, computer, you name it (which reminded me of my own son, Daniel). I asked him how it was going with the no phones. He said it was “actually fine.”

Then he went on to say that at lunch and in between classes he and his friends were talking to each other!!!

Imagine that—a bunch of kids talking instead of texting or snapping or scrolling…

In a world that’s growing increasingly reliant on technology to communicate—and at the same time increasingly lonelier—it’s refreshing to hear that kids are reconnecting in person.

I call this finding the sweet spot. We can leverage all that’s great about technology—and it is great. But by also putting it in its “place”—aka, banning the use of phones during learning time—we’re giving kids a chance to focus on what matters.

We also need to find the sweet spot at work.

Australia just joined the growing list of countries that give employees the right to disconnect after work.

How inspiring!

So as we come back from vacation and turn our auto-responders off, post Labor Day is a great time to re-establish some rules of the road around technology and connection.

This isn’t just important to keep ourselves, as individuals, less lonely and more connected, but for the collective as well.

Here’s the thing: great human leaders (including teachers and administrators) find the sweet spot between tech and connect.

That’s why Find the Sweet Spot is one the most important modules in my new program—Managers on a Mission: How to Become a Great Human Leader.

Over nine weeks (starting October 1st), you’ll design a roadmap for success with your peers. You’ll walk away with more confidence as a manager, less overwhelm, leveled-up management skills, and a built in community of fellow managers on a mission.

Are you ready to ditch the overwhelm?

This cohort is designed for any manager who is feeling overwhelmed and under supported.

Is that you?

Sign up today! There are just a few spots left.

I can’t wait to work together.
